Best Places to Stay Near the Norfolk Coast for Your Seal Trip

A complete guide to B&Bs, hotels, cottages, and glamping near the Norfolk Coast

The Norfolk Coast is one of the UK’s most breathtaking destinations — a place where unspoiled beaches, vast skies, and unique wildlife come together to create unforgettable experiences. One of the highlights for visitors is, of course, heading out on a seal trip. Whether you’re observing grey seals and common harbour seals in their natural environment at Scroby Sands, or watching the colonies basking at Blakeney Point, a seal trip is always a special experience. You might also visit Horsey in winter to see the adorable seal pups up close. Planning your stay nearby makes the entire adventure even more enjoyable and stress-free.

Seals rest on a sandy beach with seabirds nearby, ocean water and clear sky in the background.

To help you make the most of your seal trip, we’ve put together a guide to some of the best places to stay near the Norfolk Coast — from cosy B&Bs to self-catering cottages and even glamping options.

    1. Cosy Bed & Breakfasts Near the Coast

Dairy Barns Bed & Breakfast exterior in Norfolk countryside.

For many visitors, nothing beats the warm welcome of a traditional Norfolk B&B. Comfortable rooms, hearty breakfasts, and a friendly host to point you in the right direction all add to the charm.

One excellent choice is Dairy Barns Bed & Breakfast. Nestled in the beautiful countryside close to the coast, it offers stylish rooms, a peaceful setting, and a delicious farmhouse breakfast to set you up for the day. For those seeking a bit more independence, Dairy Barns also has two charming holiday cottages on the same property, ideal for families or groups. It’s ideally located for those heading off on a seal trip, whether you’re exploring Scroby Sands, Horsey, or Blakeney. The relaxed, homely atmosphere makes it a perfect base for couples, families, or solo travellers.

    Other B&Bs worth exploring include:

    • Small family-run B&Bs in Blakeney village, offering easy access to the seal boat trips.
    • Country guesthouses inland, perfect if you’d like a quiet retreat after a day on the coast.

    2. Family-Friendly Hotels and Inns

If you’re travelling with family or a group, hotels and inns can be a great option. Many offer larger rooms, on-site dining, and easy access to both the coast and local attractions. Look out for:

    • Seaside inns near Cromer and Sheringham, combining coastal charm with practical amenities.
    • Boutique hotels in Norfolk villages, where you’ll find characterful rooms and excellent food.
    • The Cliff Hotel, Gorleston-on-Sea – A luxury seaside hotel offering scenic views and a relaxing atmosphere, suitable for easy commute to local seal trips.

    3. Coastal Cottages and Holiday Rentals

For those who like the freedom of self-catering, holiday cottages are plentiful along the Norfolk Coast. From converted barns to traditional fisherman’s cottages, you’ll find something to suit every taste.

A holiday rental is perfect if you’re planning a longer stay or visiting with a group. Many cottages are just a short drive from seal trip departure points, and you’ll have the flexibility to enjoy leisurely breakfasts or cosy nights in after a day exploring.

    Blakeney Retreat Cottages
Self-catering accommodation in the heart of Blakeney, just a short walk to seal trip departure points

Rookery Barn Holidays – Offers self-catering accommodation with easy access to Horsey Beach, a prime spot for seal watching.

    4. Campsites and Glamping by the Sea

If you’d like to be even closer to nature, Norfolk has some excellent campsites and glamping spots. Imagine waking up to fresh sea air, then heading off on your seal-watching adventure. Options range from simple coastal pitches to luxury glamping pods with hot tubs.

This is a fantastic choice for adventurous travellers and families looking for something a little different.

Rose Farm Touring Park – A peaceful family-run campsite offering spacious pitches and modern amenities. Ideal for those seeking a tranquil base with easy access to the coast and seal-watching sites.

    Tips for Choosing Your Stay

When planning your accommodation, it’s worth keeping a few things in mind:

    • Location: Staying near your chosen seal trip departure point (Lowestoft, Oulton Broad, Blakeney, Morston, or Horsey) means less driving and more exploring.
    • Style of stay: Do you prefer the personal touch of a B&B, the independence of a cottage, or the adventure of camping?
    • Timing: Seal trips run all year round, but the pupping season (November–January) is especially popular. Accommodation can book up quickly, so plan ahead.

Plan Your Perfect Norfolk Seal Adventure

Wherever you choose to stay, the Norfolk Coast offers an experience like no other. From spotting seals in their natural habitat to exploring the area’s wide beaches and charming villages, you’ll find something to love at every turn.

Wild Memories Made Here: Why Our Tours Go Deeper Than the Wildlife

Beyond Sightings: Experience the Soul of the Wild

Guest post by Carl Chapman, Wildlife Tours and Education

It’s easy to think that John at Jet Adventures and myself at Wildlife Tours and Education are just taking people out to see wildlife; but we do so much more than that.

Both John and I have a wealth of wildlife at our disposal. After all this is Norfolk. Norfolk has been a hub for birds, mammals and special butterflies and dragonflies for millennia, but they are not always easy to find. Sometimes seals and birds can be everywhere. However, we often have to hunt them down. Patience is a virtue when wildlife watching. Wildlife shows on its own terms not ours. It’s not a zoo or wildlife on a stick. Careful consideration goes into giving you an experience. Consideration of tides and weather is vital to obtaining the best for our guests.

When our guests have a good time they talk about it to their friends and family and spread the word. You see when you go out with either John or myself for a tour you are not getting just the wildlife, you’re getting an experience, backed up with knowledge that only comes with years of understanding and being among wild things in wild places.

We want to share that with you and give a piece of it to you and yours to take away with you in the form of memories. Memories that will last long in minds. Memories that last forever.

  • Scroby Sands Seals By Boat

    Scroby Sands Seals By Boat

Glorious weather this past weekend (17th – 18th June)! Down in Lowestoft we were lucky enough to have some of Suffolk’s finest weather, and with that came some beautiful conditions for boat trips! As the First Light Festival was kicking off on Lowestoft’s South Beach, we too were kicking into action with our first boat trip of the weekend, off to see the Seals at Scroby Sands. We departed Lowestoft Harbour with a near full boat, heading through the pier heads before turning North towards Norfolk’s seaside resort of Great Yarmouth.

Jet Adventures boat approaching Scroby Sands sandbank with wind turbines in the distance

Scroby Sands is a naturally occurring offshore sand bank/shoal 4 miles off the coast from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. As well as a wind-farm of 30 wind turbines, producing up to 60MW of power, Scroby Sands is also home to hundreds of seals.

The sand-bank at Scroby Sands itself is huge, stretching for miles, and is constantly on the move with the rise and fall of each successive tide. As we approach on our purpose built jet boat, we slow right down. We can already hear the seals in the distance and we’re quickly getting sightings of them in the water all around us. We drop anchor a short distance from the western edge of Scroby Sands and switch off our engine. All is silent and peaceful.

We’ve had some unusually clear waters recently, with visibility at least a metre and half, where you can clearly see seals swimming around underneath us, truly a sight and one our passengers loved! Conditions were as flat as a millpond, with barely a wave or ripple inside. It truly was magical conditions at Scroby Sands, and the seals clearly agreed as they all swam up and around the boat to meet us, posing for photos! The seals at Scroby Sands always see Jet Adventures as a friendly face, although sometimes we don’t know who is more curious, us or the seals!?

Recently we’ve been noticing more seals on the Eastern (outer bank) of Scroby Sands. We think this may be due to more mackerel out that way, and if you were a seal of course you’d stick around where all the food is! They can’t get enough of it. As soon as High Water arrives, they are washed off the Scroby Sands and hunt for fish until they’re too full and return back at Low Water to rest again on Scroby Sands.

This weekend at Scroby Sands was truly a magical weekend for all involved and we’re only just getting started, with all of summer still ahead of us for lots more boat trips all over the coast between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. We’ve got some good weather incoming!

So all that’s left to do then is book a boat trip with us to see the seals at Scroby Sands and you too can enjoy this absolutely amazing spectacle that only few ever get to see, all protected by the North Sea. It’s your perfect next adventure when looking for things to do in Lowestoft!
